How do I get to the island?

Getting to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye is easy, but it does require at least one stop along the way. There is no international air service direct to San Pedro’s airstrip. Adventures in BelizeContinental, American and TACA fly nonstop into the International Airport just north of Belize City from four U.S. gateways:

• Charlotte, North Carolina via US Airways
  Houston, Texas – via Continental Airlines or TACA Airlines
• Los Angeles / Long Beach, New Orleans, and San Francisco / Oakland – via TACA Airlines
• Miami, Florida – via American Airlines or TACA Airlines

International travelers fly into the newly renovated and expanded Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize City. From there, connections can be made to Ambergris Caye. Belize’s International Airport also has nonstop service from San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Flores, Guatemala, and San Salvador, El Salvador.

From Belize City, you can either fly or take a boat to San Pedro. By air, it’s a 20-minute flight; the boat trip takes about 75 minutes.

Traveling by Air
The easiest method of traveling around Belize is by air. Two Belize airlines, Maya Island Air and Tropic Air, each have about one flight per hour every day to San Pedro, starting at around 7:30 a.m. and ending at 5:30 p.m. In peak visitor season, sometimes additional flights are added to accommodate demand. Flights originate from both the International Airport in Ladyville about 9 miles north of Belize City, where your TACA, Continental or American flight arrives, and Municipal Airport, a small airstrip in Belize City. In many cases the same Maya Island and Tropic flight picks up passengers at both airports, making the short hop between the two in a few minutes.

Fly into the International Airport and walk over to the domestic terminal and catch your connecting puddle jumper to Ambergris Caye. Adult and child one-way fares on both Maya Island and Tropic are approximately US$47 from International and run approximately every hour.

What should I bring to Belize?

Although the climate in Belize is tropical, you may want to bring a light jacket or sweater for nighttime, especially in the cooler months of November through March. Long-sleeved t-shirts, cotton shirts and blouses are helpful; it can get cool at the water’s edge in the evenings. If you plan on taking one of the exciting jungle adventure trips you should bring long cotton pants, long socks, sensible shoes or sneakers, and a light long sleeve cotton shirt for protection from mosquitoes and no-see-ums. Bring insect repellant. You are likely to have mosquitoes and no-see-ums at dusk and at night, especially in the rainy months of May through October. Bring light clothing for everything else. Shorts, t-shirts, swimwear and sandals will get you by most anywhere, and evening clothes are always casual. Bring a hat, sunglasses and good sunscreen.

Water temperatures generally range from 78 to 84 degrees F (25.6 to 28.9 Celsius), so all that is needed is a 1.5mm to 3mm wetsuit for snorkeling or diving. Some prefer a 5mm during the colder months of December through March. If you like night diving, you may want to carry something warm to put on after a dive. No dive gloves allowed!
