Snorkeling

Snorkel with Island Divers Belize

Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley

The Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley are the most popular diving/snorkeling sites in all of Belize. Depart from the dive shop on a 15 minute boat ride and head south east to Hol Chan (Maya for “Little Channel”), the first marine reserve established in Central America. Look for over 160 species of fish, nearly 40 species of corals, sponges, algaes, seagrasses, eagle and sting rays and 3 species of sea turtles. Then head to your second snorkel stop, Shark Ray Alley. Friendly reef fish including snappers and jacks dart in and about graceful stingrays and the inquisitive brown nurse sharks for an experience not to be missed. Trip time: ~3 hours

Mexico Rocks

Mexico Rocks is another great snorkeling location and it’s only a 20-25 minute boat ride away. It is located north about one third of the way up the coast of Ambergris Caye.

Mexico Rocks is a star coral patch that is located in the shallow waters midway between the reef and the island. The snorkeling is very shallow, with a maximum depth of only about 12 feet. And since this area is well inside the reef, it is protected from the bigger ocean swells, making it an excellent beginner’s snorkeling spot. But even experienced snorkelers will find this a great spot, with lots of beautiful corals, fish, soft sponges and the occasional drive-by from an eagle ray or two.
